How Municipal Court Warrants Work
Adams County municipal courts run on their own city codes. Traffic, misdemeanors, animal cases, parking, and code violations all land on their dockets. Miss a setting, skip a payment, or ignore a court requirement, and the municipal judge can issue a warrant. Colorado calls it a bench warrant or a warrant for arrest. The phrase "capias pro fine" is not the normal statewide term. A bench warrant ties to that missed setting or noncompliance, and the city court keeps control of it. An officer may serve the paper. Only the judge or clerk can confirm whether it is still active, recalled, or quashed. Recall means the court withdraws the warrant. Quash means the court voids it, often after an appearance or a motion, and that is the outcome worth asking the clerk about in plain terms.
Adams Municipal Warrants Can Hide
The Adams County Sheriff's Office Warrant Search helps, but it is not a full city-court index. It lists warrants held or entered by ACSO and excludes juvenile records. Updates land daily by 7 a.m. A blank result does not rule out a warrant. A city warrant can sit in the municipal court and city police workflow without ever showing up there, so an Adams County warrant check cannot stop at the sheriff.
Key point: No sheriff result does not prove there is no Adams County municipal warrant; confirm directly with the issuing city court.
The split matters after a missed city hearing. Run the ACSO search if the warrant may have reached the county system. Still call the city clerk even when it comes back blank. For a state case, go to the Colorado Judicial Branch Clerk of Court. The Colorado docket search adds state-court context, but it is not a complete warrant database or a municipal record search.
Municipal Courts Across Adams County
Five large incorporated cities run municipal courts with their own contacts and warrant routes. The summons is your best first routing clue. A Westminster summons may actually name an Adams or Jefferson County court, so read the court name below the signature box before you call anyone.
| City court | Typical matters | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Thornton | Traffic, misdemeanor, animal, code, parking | 720-977-5400 |
| Westminster | City code and Colorado Model Traffic Code | 303-658-2250 |
| Commerce City | Ordinance and most city traffic cases | 303-289-3640 |
| Brighton | Municipal traffic, code, and city cases | 303-655-2064 |
| Northglenn | City ordinance and covered traffic matters | 303-450-8701 |
District Court and Adams County Court sit outside these local systems. Their Clerk's Office holds the state court files and warrant entries. The elected Adams County Clerk & Recorder is a separate office and keeps no state criminal cases.
Adams City Warrant Walk-Ins
Walk-in rules differ from city to city in Adams County. Thornton Municipal Court takes active bench-warrant walk-ins on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m., or a person may be seen by video or transported to court. Thornton accepts cash and surety bonds. Westminster runs a Monday and Tuesday surrender window from 7:30 to 9 a.m. plus an add-on docket. Commerce City lets a person with an active warrant walk in at any scheduled court date and sends missed-date questions to 303-289-3640 or court1@c3gov.com. Brighton offers bond for a new date or a walk-in warrant hearing, with scheduled-date walk-ins at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Northglenn posts a general motion form, but current hearing and bond steps need clerk confirmation. Check the official city source before you travel, since calendars and entry rules can change.
Adams County Municipal Warrant Checks
A full Adams County municipal warrant check follows the case to its source. Gather the name used in court, date of birth, citation or summons number, case number, and any warrant number. An online payment result is not a warrant-status decision.
- Read the notice and identify the issuing municipal court.
- Use the official city citation tool only for the limited case data it provides.
- Call or email the clerk and ask if the warrant is active and what comes next.
- Use the public counter or court-record request channel when written proof is needed.
- Cross-check ACSO, then call its Warrants Section at 720-322-1325 if ACSO may hold it.
For state court context, call the Colorado Judicial Branch Clerk at 303-659-1161 or the Records Unit at 303-654-3239. ACSO takes written criminal-justice records requests. Juvenile, sealed, investigative, privacy, or court-restricted material may not be released.
Adams Warrant Payment Limits
Payment sites do one narrow job. Thornton and Commerce City use CitePayUSA for eligible summonses. Commerce City wants a summons number and date of birth, and a new citation may take 72 hours to appear. Northglenn's interface shows a citation-number field. None of them is a full Adams County municipal warrant search.
| Channel | What it shows | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| City payment tool | Eligible citation or payment data | That no city warrant exists |
| City court clerk | Case, warrant, hearing, bond, or motion route | Status in all other courts |
| ACSO search | Public ACSO-held entries | Every city, sealed, recent, or juvenile record |
| State docket | District and County Court context | A city warrant register |
Paying online may count as an admission in an eligible case. A mandatory appearance cannot be resolved on a basic pay screen, so ask the Adams County clerk what a payment will do before you click.
Municipal Warrants: What They Show
An Adams County city warrant entry may blend court and law-enforcement fields, and detail varies by court. Read the court, case, status, and next-step fields together. Do not fixate on the payment amount.
| Person details | Name and date of birth or partial date used to distinguish the record. |
|---|---|
| Identifiers | Warrant number, case number, or citation and summons number. |
| Origin | The city, municipal court, or holding agency tied to the process. |
| Basis | City offense, traffic matter, failure to appear, nonpayment, or failure to comply. |
| Financial terms | Court-set bond, fine, or city warrant fee when applicable. |
| Status | Active, served, recalled, or quashed, plus reset or motion steps. |
No single local format is promised in Adams County. Treat the case or citation number as the key to verify with the clerk. Systems can lag after judicial action, so keep written proof of any recall or quash.
Who Serves Adams City Warrants
City police handle most municipal process. ACSO also holds and serves warrants entered in its system, and its detention facility covers booking, bond, transport, and a listed 24-hour surrender location. Adams County posts no countywide municipal marshal roster. So do not count on a separate marshal unit. The official District of Colorado courthouse page shows the separate federal courthouse context outside Adams County municipal courts.

A federal courthouse cannot clear a Thornton, Westminster, Commerce City, Brighton, or Northglenn warrant. The Adams County city court that issued the municipal process remains the right source.
- Issuing court
- The municipal court whose judge controls the warrant.
- Holding agency
- The police or sheriff office responsible for entry, service, or custody.
- Served
- The warrant has been executed or service completed.
- Recall
- The issuing court withdraws the warrant from active status.
Northglenn code gives one example. Officers there may execute another municipality's process. That happens when law permits. Even so, the issuing court still resolves the warrant, and agency cooperation never merges Adams County city records into one list.
Clearing a Municipal Court Warrant
Confirm with the court first. Clearing an Adams County municipal warrant can mean a walk-in, bond, add-on docket, motion, or reset. Post bond. It secures release and a later appearance, not the end of the case.
- Ask the issuing clerk to confirm active status and the judge’s terms.
- Ask whether walk-in, set appearance, motion, or counsel is allowed.
- Confirm the bond or payment form, location, payee, and fee.
- Obtain a receipt, written order, and new court date.
- Attend and confirm that court and agency systems show the new status.
Warning: A warrant stays active until the issuing court acts; payment or a blank sheriff result alone may not clear it.
Check first. Anyone told to surrender should confirm the route. ACSO lists its detention facility for surrender at all hours, though a set bond or fast release is not promised. The Adams County warrant records overview shows how court and sheriff stages connect.
Fresh Start and City Warrants
The 17th Judicial District's Fresh Start Warrant Forgiveness event offers a limited chance to resolve eligible warrants without the normal arrest path. The 2026 event has ended. Adams County expects it back in 2027. Dates should arrive in spring. Eligibility and format may change, so review the next notice. The official Adams County government gateway provides civic context for the county's coordinated public programs and services.

Fresh Start unites Adams County and court partners. Each participating municipal court still controls its own city warrant and eligibility decision.
Municipal participation varies. The 2023 report named Northglenn, Brighton, and Commerce City among local participants. Those are program results, not a current warrant count. Fresh Start is no standing portal and does not promise every Adams County city warrant qualifies. Outside an announced event, use the municipal clerk's normal walk-in, bond, motion, or hearing route.
